Is it possible to have the chart control generate a crosstab automatically from the data in one column/series?
If so, how do you do it, and if not, what is the recommended way to do this?

I've come to the conclusion that this has not been implemented and that I would have to pivot the data myself in advance.

After double-checking with the developer, you are right, the component does support automatically generating a crosstab from the data. You will, like you already stated, need to pivot the data yourself.
